Loch Squad
Tune – Rose of Claire

Many songs have been written ‘bout Maree and Lochewe
Of mountains and of rivers near the village of Poolewe
But I sing about a loch that’s aye dear to me
It nestles there discreetly not too far from the sea.

On numerous occasions fished from it varied shore
But those days have gone now I fish from them no more
Nor do we wander blissfully the young ones all have gone
Nowadays I walk the shore by myself and all alone.

I walk along the far off shore see footprints on the sand
Distant voices calling I hear the winds command
A solitary buzzard above me in the sky
I witness untold beauty as seasons say goodbye.

I come to Allt a’Cham Loin Mhoir a gem concealed from view
For a while I linger there before I bid adieu
Across the heather moorland where streams run dark and deep
I reach the sheltered leeway ground the hills they are asleep.

I sit upon a grassy knoll to digest nature’s gift
As I hear water gurgling my thoughts begin to drift
Loch Squad to me your special old memories can’t replace
And wonder who in future years my footsteps will retrace.
