The Old Mill
tune – Soraidh Leis an Aite

Not so long ago we walked down to the mill
After many years the walls a standing still
The building looked forlorn a legacy of time
Comprising dry-stone walling no cement or lime.

Could clearly see the wheel just as it was before
Though now it is redundant does not turn no more
Beside the gable wall it stood the test of time
Man from early days with nature did combine.

A simple wooden sluice the water to divert
A natural resource to power did convert
It turned the grinding wheel the waters they did churn
It controlled the volume at Brown Coast’s tumbling burn.

Our heritage we must attempt it to conserve
Its part of local history and it we must preserve
Although the building small it served its purpose well
Customers from all around wherever they did dwell.

Now we cannot tell when last the mill did grind
Will search all local records perhaps a date to find
The men who once worked there for many years are
one
We owe it to their memory to record it in a song.
