The Challain’s of Yore
tune – Dearest My Own One

The Challain’s we knew are no longer here
The times are a-changing of this I do fear
I sat by the Rayburn with time to reflect
The Challain’s of old I ne’er will forget.

By the fireside watched ‘alba’ on TV and on line
A Speyside malt whisky and a vintage red wine
No more do we visit our friends as before
For now Social Media is all to the fore.

A Happy New Year by phone and by text
By e-mail and Facebook what ere will be next
Our friends and relations send greetings sincere
But not like the old days – a proper New Year.

With Covid restrictions we could not go far
For various reasons we can’t use the car
No more do we travel the district around
Within walking distance can always be found.

As I sat by the Rayburn more thoughts came to mind
In verse to record them I now felt inclined
Refilled my glass with a malt ‘Slainte Mhor’
And fondly remembered the Challain’s of yore.

After a while an ‘old’ tune came along
Inspired by its rhythm to compose a wee song
The words harmonising in verse and in line
Another malt whisky before ‘calling time’.
