The Lay-by
tune – Pheigi à Ghraidh

Parked in the lay-by delayed for a while
Witnessing beauty round each Summer Isle
Sail Mhor and Beinn Ghoblach dictating the scene
Their contrasting outline distinctive and clean.

Parked in the lay-by three lochs could be seen
Scorraig and Coigeach sketched in between
Loch Seaforth returning from Stornoway’s Isle
Landscaped by nature no one can defile.

Parked in the lay-by thought for a while
This beauty compares with the Emerald Isle
Compelled now to linger respect did demand
A picture commissioned by ‘Higher’ command.

Parked in the lay-by peaked mountains could see
Clear in the distance where red deer run free
Kildonan’s sad history displayed on the left
Dispersed for a sheep farm its people bereft.

Parked in the lay-by reflected a while
On yesterday’s steps through Dundonnell’s Oak Isle
Return there with freedom to wander and roam
A people contented Strath Beag was our home.

The ferry, Loch Seaforth, was returning from Stornoway when this photograph was taken.
