My Old Mouth Organ
tune – Dearest My Own One

I have a mouth organ a Hohner by name
Although it is ancient its fame I proclaim
Played in the gloaming to me it brings cheer
The tunes that I play I played yesteryear.

Dearest my Own One the first tune I did play
Well I remember how proud was that day
The next tune perfected The Road to Dundee
A favourite tune it still is to me.

Finally mastered The Shores of Lochewe
The Green Hills of Islay, The Cave up at Smoo
Scotland the Brave and Leaving Lismore
The Mountains of Mourne sweeping down to the shore.

The Aberdeen Lights and The Skyline of Skye
A Gordon For Me and a droppie for bye
The Thistle of Scotland and the old Rowan Tree
The Road to the Isles and The Rose of Tralee.

Some tunes have now used for songs of my own
The words they come freely when I am alone
Inspired by the music no pattern is set
All part of history lest we forget.

Each song tells a story the words appertain
Of people and places the verses contain
Of mountains and townships my thoughts do retrace
The paths of my young days I freely embrace.

Each song tells a story the words appertain
Of people and places the verses contain
Of mountains and townships my thoughts do retrace
The paths of my young days I freely embrace.

I sing of events some tragic and sad
Also remember the good times we’ve had
All worth recording in song and in verse
For me it’s the simplest way to converse.

So for my mouth organ I have much respect
A true friend when lonely I’ve come to expect
I play the same tunes I’ve played in the past
The times may have changed but the tunes they will last.
