Footsteps Retraced
tune – Fear à Bhata
Retraced my footsteps to yonder river
To where the Black Bridge crossed it hither
Succumbed to nature the words pertaining
Where once a driveway, no road remaining.
In all seasons we walked it daily
The sounds and sights remember clearly
The song birds singing the red deer roaming
And salmon pools with deep water foaming.
We’d walk the stone walls each side sustaining
For many years the banks retaining
Built by craftsmen now ensuring
A credit to their work enduring.
Through the bracken gorse and bramble
We scrambled onwards where once did ramble
Among the wild woods we freely wandered
Far from the driveway we oft meandered
We’d take the high path before descending
Down by the green fields we went a wending
Rejoined the driveway no more a roving
We’d cross the Black Bridge o’er water flowing.
And today I tell a story
Of days remembered in timeless glory
Retraced my footsteps to yonder river
To where the Black Bridge crossed it hither.
