FROM INVERASDALE TO POOLEWE - HECTOR MACKENZIE'S SONGS
Many old ploughs can be seen throughout the area. The plough in the photo came from a croft in Inverasdale.
The plough mentioned in the song came from a farm in the Black Isle. Now it is a garden feature. Hector can remember the plough in this picture being used, adapted to be pulled by a tractor.
The Old Plough
tune – Homes of Donegal
It languished hidden in the grass
For many a long year
But rescued by the man himself
When dreaded news did hear
He was a bit emotional
To his eye there came a tear
A restoration plan in mind
No scrap yard he made clear.
He pulled it out and brushed it clean
And laid it on the floor
He organised some welding
He could not ask for more
It now was strong and true to shape
Just as it was before
He ordered wooden handles too
Its beauty to restore.
He hired a man with special skills
The handles for to form
The old plough had to ‘look the part’
His driveway to adorn
Mounted on a concrete plinth
It must not look forlorn
It will provide a beacon bright
Its usefulness reborn.
He’ll paint it soon as time permits
In colours bright and bold
At least that is his story
It’s what I have been told
He’ll order paint from Norland’s Store
His vision to unfold
His dream eventually complete
Much beauty to behold.
And when the big day does come round
For fixing on its stand
A ceremony to mark the day
The occasion will demand
He’ll reminisce of farming ways
When the old plough tilled the land
Good memories of bygone days
Respect it does command.
